Virginia Railway Express provides commuter rail service from the Northern Virginia suburbs to Alexandria, Crystal City and downtown Washington, D.C. VRE operates 30 trains from 18 stations and carry, on average, 20,000 passengers daily. VRE maintains part of its fleet of MPI MP36PH-3C locomotives in Manassas, VA. The MP40PH-3C uses a 16-cylinder EMD 710GB series diesel engine generating 4000HP to pull trains of up to 8 cars and can reach speeds over 100mph (but seldom on VRE trackage).
