EXTRA-FARE BUS TOURS

Extra-Fare Bus tours are now available on-line for reservations.  There are two, so far, as follow:

FRIDAY, August 8: Bus Trip to the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, MD.  Cost is $40 per person and  includes transportation, museum admission, and a train ride at the museum.   See details at  http://www.bigtrainlayout.org/extra-fare/bo-rail.  You can reserve your tickets online using PayPal or you can print out the registration form (link provided on the web-page) and mail it in.

The B&O Railroad Museum is recognized nationally as the birthplace of American railroading. It was here within the Museum's 40-acre campus that Baltimore surveyors and engineers set about building the B&O Railroad in 1829, laying the first commercial long-distance track, building the first passenger station, and inventing America's unique railroad. Nearly 200 locomotives and rolling stock illustrate the railroad from 1830 through the present day.  The museum also displays tools, time-pieces, fine art, RR china and silver, uniforms, furniture, and personal memorabilia, as well as  a collection of scale models and toy trains illustrateing American railroad history.  See more at http://www.borail.org/(Note: This is an utterly cool railroad museum!)

The bus departs Chantilly at 8:00am sharp and arrives in Baltimore 9:30am.   There is a two hour guided group tour followed by an 11:30am train ride, with lunch at the TraxSide Snax eatery (you pay for lunch, please see menu at http://www.borail.org/food.aspx for details)

The bus departs Baltimore at 1:00pm sharp, returning to Chantilly at 3:00pm.

VRE provides commuter rail service from the Northern Virginia suburbs to Alexandria, Crystal City and downtown Washington, D.C. VRE operates 30 trains from 18 stations and carries, on average, 20,000 passengers daily.  VRE maintains part of its fleet of MPI MP36PH-3C locomotives in Manassas, VA. The MP40PH-3C uses a 16-cylinder EMD 710GB series diesel engine generating 4000HP to pull trains of up to 8 cars and can reach speeds over 100mph (but seldom does on VRE trackage).  See more at http://vre.org/!
